I have spent most of tonight downloading movies to put on my iPod for the trip to Los Angeles next week. So far I have Gayniggers from Outer Space, Freaks, Sex Madness, I Am Legend, The ABC’s of Sex Education for Trainable Persons, Rashomon (which may not be watchable on the iPod, depends how the subtitles come out), and Death of a President. I did most of my packing today, so I am reasonably close to ready; we have to be ready by Tuesday night because our flight is at some horrible hour like 7:30am - but hey, we’ll get in at 9:30am, and head straight to Disneyland!

I am reorganizing music like a crazy person, now that I have a 500GB external drive for it to sit on. When I first started actually collecting digital music - which I hadn’t really done before - it was in a kind of haphazard manner, with a bunch of tunes all thrown into a directory. When I started ripping my own CDs, I made categories by artist for them, but I was still kind of lax with it. But now I’m putting everything into a category by artist, except for “Various Artists” CDs which are organized by album. The point is to avoid downloading duplicates, although I haven’t found a whole lot of duplicates yet as I’ve been organizing.

I’m pretty sure iTunes is going to go insane when I fire it up and try to sync - it’s going to say it can’t find anything! I don’t have a lot of songs rated or with “number of times played” so maybe I should just start a whole new library, I dunno. I need to delete a bunch of podcasts, too…I don’t need those hanging around.

Eeee! My favorite skin makers, MyTego, are having a darn good sale for February. You can see the reduced pricing here, and it’s already reflected on the website. They’re the ones who did my Sidekick skin, which I have been very happy with - and I get a lot of compliments on it!

A says she doesn’t see the need for one because her Nano will be in its case all the time. But she doesn’t object to me designing one for her anyway, so maybe when she sees what I come up with she’ll want it. If not I might design one for my video iPod even though it’s in a white case that’s only semi-translucent. I just want more device skins, what can I say?!

Thanks to crayonbeam’s mention of custom earphones, I now have what I hope will be the perfect earphones for listening to my iPod. At first I ended up at Ultimate Ears, but their cheapest custom model is $550. Next I came across PodFitKit. After reading the instructions and FAQ, and watching the video, I promptly ordered a pair in off-white. The PodFitKit is a silicone putty type material that you fit around your existing earbuds, and into your ear. You let it harden for 10 minutes, and then you can remove your brand new custom earphones. And it’s only $15! I was quite delighted to find this product and I hope it gets here soon.

To my great disappointment, the Logitech wireless headphones I ordered don’t fit. They work fine - the Bluetooth is great - but they are too big and heavy for me. They don’t seem to sit properly behind my head, and they’re squashing one ear and hurting it. So I think I am going to have to sell them, or something. They were $32 on Amazon plus $11 shipping, and I want to get as much back as I can. I’m really unhappy about this because I am enjoying the freedom of no wires, and there aren’t many good alternatives. The next generation is called Free Pulse but they are very expensive, and I have no idea how they’d feel on my ears either. There aren’t many affordable alternatives; I was considering the Creative CB2530 which looks much more comfortable, but Cnet really didn’t like them so I’m not sure what to do. I may just have to use wired earphones for the foreseeable future, unfortunately.

Oh dear, I seem to have broken my iPod. iTunes froze mid-sync and I ended up removing it without ejecting. Now iTunes won’t read it and neither will Anapod. I’m managing to copy all the files from it onto my backup drive, and iTunes wants me to restore the factory settings. But if I restore then and then copy the files back, does it break again? I’m so thoroughly confused…I just hope I can get it back to normal.

Oh, and I also deleted the files I’d bought from the Russian MP3 site. So I was going to get them via FileSharing but then this whole iPod mess happened. I don’t know what’s going on.

  • I am almost at my goal with PayPerPost. My goal is $400 - that’s the iPod plus the iSkin case plus the A/C charger it turns out I didn’t need. I only need a couple more posts to make that goal! Hang in there folks (especially Kelly), we’re almost done. And then I will have a fully paid-for supah-cool iPod with no guilt about spending all that money. Blogging for cash is great, though I’ll be glad when I’ve met my goal and take a break!
  • Speaking of the iSkin case, it arrived today. It took me a good 20 minutes to get it on the iPod and fitted perfectly and without dust or cat hair under any part of it. It looks awesome and I feel so much better knowing my iPod is protected.
  • My fingertip is not protected, though. I accidentally ripped a whole lot of the nail off last night, then tonight I got the fingertip bandaid wet and didn’t bother to put on a new one. Oh well.
  • tiny_elbow had wanted to know what podcasts I listen to, so here’s the list. Obviously all the video podcasts are new subscriptions.
A Way with Words - Amateur Traveler (video) - Atheist Viewpoint (video) - BBC Ouch! - Faggregator (video) - GenderTalk - MouseTunes - NeoCast - The ADHD Podcaster - The DisabilityNation Podcast - This Week in Tech - Thrill Network: In the Loop - WAMU’s Kojo Nnamdi Tech Tuesday

I’m still all hyped up about my iPod, of course. So far my favorite feature - besides the big one, watching videos - are the fact that podcasts are dated and it shows which ones you haven’t listened to yet. I like podcasts, so that plus the scrolling title is an awesome benefit for me. And the whole thing is just awesome in general!

I’m trying to decide what, if any, accessories I should get now. For my old one I had a $15 pair of earbuds and they are working fine on this one, of course. My car charger and cassette adapter work fine too. I spent $25 on the iSkin eVo3 case (the “arctic” color) because I want the best protection possible for this iPod; for my old one I got a pink silicone case - which I have since lost! - but it was kind of cheap. For this one I want good protection.

I got a $50 Amazon gift certificate from the webmaster of a site I’ve worked on this year, so I am looking at a few accessories there. So far my Shopping List includes the USB power adapter, TuneJuice battery backup, Logitech wireless headphones, the Macally portable speaker, and the iTop button relocator. Or I could use the $50 for something from my wishlist, and just let the iPod be an iPod and not obsess over it so much. Input welcome!

My 80GB Snazzy McSnazzersons Video iPod is waiting at home for me! They had said it would be there on the 19th, but I was kind of hoping it would turn up today. I wasn’t able to print the official “shipment release authorization” form due to a lack of a functioning printer, so I handwrote a page that had similar information (I authorize FedEx to blah blah…for this tracking number..please leave…this page is equivalent to your actual form…[signature]) and taped it up on the door, hoping that would be good enough.

I just printed out the official form (at work) in case I needed to use it for tomorrow, but then I checked the FedEx tracking number:

Dec 18, 2006 - 11:27 AM - Delivered - Left at front door. Package delivered to recipient address, release authorized

And then I squealed in my head a lot! I am very excited about trying it out when I get home. I already used the Videora iPod Converter to make the CSI:NY episode Silent Night iPod-compatible, and last night I downloaded SG-1’s episode 200 and Atlantis’s The Real World via BitTorrent (thanks clayfoot!) because I’d never seen them. So I plan to convert those to iPod format too, whee!

Did I mention that I’m excited? Did I mention that the iPod’s hard drive is twice the size of my laptop’s hard drive? Did I mention that I can’t wait to get home? Wheeeeeeee!

I think I’ve decided what to do with my PPP money: I want to buy a 80GB video iPod, which is the latest and greatest version. I don’t know that I need quite that much space, but it has the best battery life - 6.5hrs while playing video, so it’s enough for a couple of movies while on the bus or traveling or whatever. So bear with me while I earn a little more money for that; I have about $70 worth of posts to make. After that I will probably quit for a while.

Added: I bought it. Yikes. I am going to sell my 3G on eBay.
