Just a quickie post here. After years of hosting journal.amanita.net at /home/me/amanita.net/journal I have switched it to /home/me/journal.amanita.net. If anything looks broken, please let me know, as there are surely hard-coded absolute paths somewhere that I’ve forgotten about.
The very first picture of me in my purple corset is here. It is probably NSFW…it’s not explicit, but I’m only wearing underthings with the corset. (It’s probably safe for my parents.) It’s not a great picture, and the corset needs to go down much further, but it’s a good start. I wore it for about 30 minutes tonight.
I ended up buying corsetworld.net because I needed to have a purpose for my domain. The survey showed that geekygrrl.net was very popular, but I didn’t know what I would do with it, so I chose the one that I would actually know what to do with. It will be the new home for my collection of links to corsetmakers’ websites, and I will probably put my own pictures up there, and
sskipstress has a home there if she ever wants it!
Well, it’s done. I’ve deleted the catch-all address I’ve used for years at my domain. I’m actually pretty scared of what’s going to happen…I don’t know if it’s an aversion to all change or if there’s legitimate reason to be scared of losing mail at this point. I visited 233 websites and changed my registered e-mail address. There are another 139 addresses that were either already established as legitimate, or for which I couldn’t change the registration information for whatever reason. The legitimate ones are being forwarded to my Gmail, and the ones I couldn’t change are being forwarded to a webmail account on my host that I can check periodically.
I’m pretty sure everything I would want to receive has been taken care of in one way or another, but it’s still nervewracking. Cutting down on the 1000+ spam e-mails I received daily (and all the bounces from falsified headers) will be nice, but I’m still nervous about possibilities. I’m not sure if I should bother enabling Dreamhost’s Junk Filter on my domain…if it doesn’t apply to forwarded addresses, then it’s only good for whatever is getting delivered to that spare account. I think for now I’m going to leave it turned off; if I continue to get lots of spam in either my Gmail or the spare account maybe I will use it.
If you need to reach me, the e-mail address you already use probably still works. Ask if you have questions about that.
Two things that are nifty enough to get a post about them now, rather than later:
Tagalag is a people-tagging system with APIs and all that. “Tag people. Manage your online identity. Create lasting, contextual links. Tagalag is a new way to define your relationships. You can see what others have tagged you as and remove tags if they are inappropriate.” You can tag me! [via eHub]
$3 Domains is an offer from Yahoo Small Business. It’s (presumably) legit, and you can register a domain for up to five years. Seems to be for new customers only, one to a customer. I need to make a list of domains to think about registering… [via WeblogToolsCollection]
My domain name, amanita.net, was originally bought through Network Solutions back in January 1999. It was something like $35 at the time! Prices have dropped substantially, and I’ve been with Dotster for the past several years, paying $15/yr for each of the multiple domains I have registered. I was helping my brother-in-law register a domain over the weekend, and he picked GoDaddy because he could get five years for about $35. I looked into it for myself and found that I could get a transfer plus four years for the same price, so I initiated the transfer.
Now Dotster has written to me offering a permanent price cut for their rates. They want to charge me the same as GoDaddy, which is $9/yr, and they’ll throw in some free stuff I won’t need like domain forwarding. I have never liked Dotster’s website, I’ve always found it clunky - but I don’t need to administer my domain directly very often, so it’s been fine. When I looked at GoDaddy’s site, though, their user interface is much friendlier. I sent a note to Dotster about this and the guy responded saying they were going to have a new interface launching today at 12 noon Pacific. It’s a half-hour past that and I haven’t seen a new interface yet. How long is enough? Are they really launching a new interface or was that just a ploy to keep my business? (I want to see it now!) Does it really matter who I use as a registrar? Given that I have multiple domains at Dotster and I was only transferring one, should I stay put so I get the discounted rate for all of them? Should I switch everything to GoDaddy? Things to think about.
My site has apparently been flickering off and on all day. I haven’t been able to access it at all, and I know of others who have not been able to, but apparently one person did briefly. Most of my e-mail is routed through my domain, so I have only been getting a few e-mails today through there. Some do come through - I’ve kept up with a couple of Cruise Critic threads, since I have ohmygodlessthanfourdays before I leave - but most seem to be tied up in nowheresville. Sigh.
Added, 3:30pm: Just came back from a longer-than-expected meeting and everything seems to be okay. Phew! Now to just hope that my missing e-mails all come through eventually.
