My Blogathon Workspace (23/49)

Posted by: Meredith
July 25th,
2009

I wanted to share my workspace with you. It was suggested by the Blogathon that we post pictures of our workspace to the group Flickr pool, and although I was much too late to win a $5 sponsorship that way, I figure it’s not too late to post the picture.

So here is my workspace. My monitor is blind, so I’ll describe it for her and anybody else who is blind and/or too lazy to click through. I’m working on my bed, on a netbook with a pink flowers skin on it; in the picture, a blank WordPress “new post” page is showing. Next to me is a giant veggie platter from the supermarket. In front of me is the Dreamcast I was talking about earlier – I haven’t put it away from when I was looking it! Looking forward from the bed – which has my fuzzy Hello Kitty blanket on it – is a laundry basket filled with stuff (not sure what it is, myself), a basket filled with stuff (haven’t looked in that one either), and a cabinet on which the TV is sitting. The TV is on showing the “pause” screen of Bioshock. Against the same wall is a closet door and a Hello Kitty calendar hanging next to it. Yep, my wife indulges me. :)

It’s the summer semester, 2009. What’s to come?

  • Crochet
    • Pink socks for a friend
    • Finish my sock
    • Finish winter sweater
    • Finish baby lamb
    • Laceweight pink shawl
    • Tunisian crochet in between, to relax, just mindless stitching
  • Working, working, working…makin’ money
  • Walking class (ends June 5th)
  • RID conference in Philadelphia, first week in August
  • Genealogical research, if I can find stuff
  • Playing computer games – Spore, Civilization IV, Sims 2

BTW I did pick a new license plate, I’ll post pictures when I get it!

I just wanted to say that I got a direct message on Twitter from Dr. Drew. Which is totally cool. So, yeah. *grins*

In other news, I have three tests tomorrow – one in Deaf History (missed during vacation), two in Cultural Geography (missed one during vacation) – and a presentation for Deaf History. Yikes.

And then I get to see [info]gretchen_marie!

  • I think the Romanian team made Silivaș cut her hair short in Seoul because it made her look older. She was 16 but they competed her as 18. #
    • Compare her hairstyle here, in 1987, and here, in 1988. That 1988 haircut is to make her look older, IMHO. And she always wore her hair long every other time – here in 1989 she’s back to a ponytail!
  • LOL, Vin Diesel look-a-like taking down bleachers opposite the Ellipse took a break to do a little dance. #ilovedc #

  • Thousands of people drive by Braddock’s Rock every day, few know its story: http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/13379/ #ilovedc #
  • Other students surprised I look confident 5 min before a test. Explained my “either know it or you don’t” philosophy. They’re unconvinced. #
    • You either know it, or you don’t. If you don’t know it now, cramming for the next three minutes isn’t going to help. I ended up getting a 108 on the test, by the way; extra credit made it possible to get up to a 119. I had the highest grade in the class – one of only two A’s.
  • Crap, Sociology of Interpreting conflicts with Speechreading and Communication Strategies next semester. #
    • I ended up going with Sociology of Interpreting because it will be more interesting and I really like the professor. I want to take a class on speechreading and communication strategies but it just won’t work out this semester, I guess. Maybe someday.
  • Going to make a rainbow Peep cake to celebrate Iowa and Vermont. BAM, BAM! #
    • We made two! I have to post the pictures, they’re still on my camera.
  • Getting the Fail Whale on Twitter and my Facebook account is down for maintenance. HELP I’M ALONE IN THE WORLD #
    • I was totally serious. I could have posted to my blog, I guess, but at the time I felt like I had no way to talk to other people in real time, no other way to blurt out what I was thinking. Crazy.
  • “This was one of the few papers in my teaching career that I actually enjoyed reading. Grade: A” – Aw yeah. My American Deaf History prof. #
    • I’m so awesome.
  • http://twitpic.com/30eyn – The truck is back! Has a URL on it now but I couldn’t see all of it. Anybody know? #ilovedc #
    • The URL turned out to be TruthTruckUSA.com – I forgot I’d taken this picture of him back in 2007.
  • Somebody got to my site searching for “is hiddenite mine a scam” – no, it’s not, they are quite open about how they operate. It’s just fun! #
    • I mean, yes they do put rocks in your bucket, but only if you pay for them to do that. And if you’re paying for it, you kind of know it’s in there, right? It’s more for the kiddies to get to have fun. It’s not a scam. Just good clean dirty fun at Hiddenite Gem Mine. My jeans never recovered, they still have some orange clay in them!
  • Watching Generations. I have memorized far too much of this. Data’s nascent attempts at humor remind me of @brentspiner and his weak tweets. #
    • Quite striking really, because his tweets got very bad for a while there. He’s less inane now but still not making a whole lot of sense. I get the feeling Twitter is beyond him…perhaps LeVar Burton got him on Twitter because LeVar is a geek, but Brent is not? Who knows.
  • Shame on @wcbstv for printing Deaf English in this article: http://wcbstv.com/topstories/deaf.girl.dog.2.979883.html makes them sound dumb. #
  • All the Star Trek/Judaism interaction you could hope for: http://www.trekjews.com #
  • So nice to randomly just call up my best friend for a “hey what’s up” chat. Have I mentioned I love having a VP?! #
    • So totally cool. I just call people anytime I want now.
  • The #twittercruise is going to Jamaica, the single most homophobic place on earth. No thanks! Find out more at http://boycottjamaica.org #
    • I am removing the rest of the tweets, but I will tell the story. This turned into a huge debacle involving a TweetGrid chat room where people thought I was crashing their party and accused me of spreading hate and racism (?!) for tweeting about boycottjamaica.org. I tweeted it a couple of times because I was treating it like a hashtag, which is what it was, and I saw the tag was flying fast and furious so I wanted to keep myself up there. Apparently this was showing up in their TweetGrid and people got very, very upset by it. One woman felt she had to let me know I was making a fool of myself – to whom I do not know! It was quite hilarious honestly, they were very indignant, and yet sad because they have no idea how Twitter or TweetGrid or hashtags work. I hope they teach them about it on this cruise of theirs.
  • Now reading “A Terp on the Line” – mystery by George Joslin about an ASL terp. ISBN 978-1-60458-168-3. Hope to finish it before our trip! #
    • Oooooh I better get reading. It won’t take long really, but I have been busy with school reading, so I haven’t finished this yet. Honestly it’s kind of dumb…okay it’s really dumb. But I feel obligated to read it for the cultural literacy, since it’s about an interpreter. It’s not on Amazon from what I can tell – in fact if you search for the ISBN, my website is the only thing that comes up! It was at the Gallaudet library though. I want to finish it before I leave because I will be bringing Twilight as my leisure/plane/beach reading.
  • I really hope Millvina Dean makes it to 100 so she can be gently fêted as part of the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster. #
    • She is the last survivor of the Titanic disaster. She was only a couple of months old at the time, so she doesn’t remember it, but she was there. It will be sad when she dies and we have no living links to it anymore. At least I think we don’t – only one person who had been on board ended up leaving, and he died in the 1950’s. I don’t think anyone else who “narrowly escaped” the fatal voyage is still alive either. Millvina Dean is it!
  • Just ordered personalized plates, Virginia “YUM TOFU” – something I can be proud of! They’ll arrive in 4 weeks. #
    • Naturally I got this in the wake of the ILVTOFU news story. I was sitting over a bowl of vegetarian pho, chewing the tofu, when I realized I’d like a similar license plate myself! So they’re on the way. It was either this or “MMM TOFU” and I decided on YUM.

    • At the circus. Circus is awesome. My favorite is the Ball of Death, which has now been renamed the Globe of Steel. #
    • Best moment: Head clown was asked by a girl carrying program: Want you to sign your name! He started fingerspelling! ROCK!! #
      • That was so awesome. He was Tom Dougherty and I got a real kick out of this. The little girl handed him the program and he said “is this for me?” She said no, I want you to sign your name! I didn’t catch what he spelled because I was too surprised by the fact that he was doing it. That was absolutely the best part of the circus!

    • Ouch, just finished watching “Recipe for Success” on Food Network featuring The Monkey Bean in Denver…which closed July 2006. Rerun much? #
      • Ironically the show turned out to have a copyright date of 2006. I guess it didn’t last much past the airing.
    • Tried Omegle.com – chat with a random stranger. Got a 19-year-old in Wenzhou, China who hates dogs. Hit disconnect due to disinterest. #
      • I have decided the site is dumb and I can’t think of anything that I would possibly use it for.
    • I don’t normally drive into the city on weekends, but my goodness this town is swarming with tourists! Maybe a few locals too? #ilovedc #
    • Looks like the Gallaudet Archives got the E.M. Gallaudet check this morning after all. $76! I kinda wanted it for myself but they’re 2nd. :) #
      • I had been bidding on it and I had to back out at $56. I would have loved to hold a piece of history in my hands like that! Maybe the archives will let me touch it when it arrives, hee hee. Should I feel bad for bidding it up though? It was me and another bidder, and then the archives apparently sniped it at the close of the auction. (I had notified them about it earlier in the week.)
    • Sorry @sajego, I found a better automated Twitter thing than @BetsieLawnBott. Meet @GusAndPenny – cats who use a TWEETING CAT DOOR!! #

      • You know, Molly! She’s 20 now.

Have decided that links and twitpics get posted without commentary. The point is YOU CLICK. :)

  • Just watched somebody get totally busted for reckless driving. – http://bkite.com/05ZF0 #
    • That was seriously hilarious. If you check out the BrightKite link, you’ll see this wasn’t in a great part of town. There was a cop car ahead of us in the left turn lane, and the light to go straight turned red. A car pulled up and stopped normally, then suddenly a car went screeching up behind him with a loud squeal of tires. He stopped before hitting the other car, but :A: and I saw the cops in front of us craning their heads around, and then they got out and went and had a chat with Mr. Drives Too Fast. We had to wait through the light cycle for them to move, but it was worth it for the laugh!
  • Extremely sadly empty here. Craft section is virtually nonexistent. Not much else interesting. – http://bkite.com/05ZG2 #
  • I single-handedly tripled their GLBT collection. Literally. Myself. – http://bkite.com/05ZGb #
    • The above two tweets are from the Book Thing in Baltimore. You can get all the books you want there for free. People donate books, and we’d been saving up a ton of gay-related books to bring to them. Normally we wouldn’t travel so far just to donate books, but we know the Salvation Army would have thrown them out, so we waited until we needed to make a trip to Baltimore. The shelves were horribly bare, though; signs said that it was their busiest time of year for pickups and slowest time of year for dropoffs. I didn’t find a single thing I liked enough to take.
  • Got a neckloop for the first time ever. Hoping it works. Here to see Cats. – http://bkite.com/0608q #
    • Ah, the most realistic part of Cats: Intermission, where Old Deuteronomy sits and watches all the people moving about. #
    • Oh, and the neckloop is broken of course. Turns out I don’t need it though…I already know all the lyrics to the whole musical. #
      • It was a great show! I don’t think neckloops ever work though. I asked around online to see if people ever bring their own or anything like that, but no one was able to help me. God, I loved the show though. I could have sat through it again the very next day.
    • 1st came 4 the peanuts, didnt spk up, wasnt a peanut. Then came 4 pistachios… (HUGE apologies 2 Niemoeller) #
      • Nobody commented on this on Twitter. Harumph. I thought it was funny. Horribly offensive, perhaps, but funny! The pistachio recall doesn’t seem to be making as big an impact as the peanut recall, though, so I suppose most people didn’t even get the joke.
    • Driving on the Hill itself is like playing Gran Turismo, moving to the front of the pack by dodging and weaving. #ilovedc #
      • I think I will repost my #ilovedc Tweets without commentary. I try to make them speak for themselves anyway.
    • Every time I see a motorcycle zoom past, I think “yeah…life’s pretty cheap to that type.” #nerd #
      • I really do. Not if they’re driving normally, but if they’re being jerks I think it!
    • http://tinyurl.com/d9bm43 really wants to be made into a LOLcat. A very tiny LOLcat. #
    • http://twitpic.com/2o0jq – Potholder in progress, going very slow #
    • http://twitpic.com/2oftj – Time for cherry blossoms! #
    • Kids all over The Hill, some dressed up (pages?) some not dressed up (tourists) – I love American right to access govt #ilovedc #
    • Could’ve paid $5 for a book on Half.com, but the author has a Half account and it was only $15. Got from author – now that’s direct support! #
      • The book was Reading Between the Lips by Lew Golan; that link takes you to the book on Half.com where you can order it from him too!
    • How come nobody told me Old Navy has XXL sizes?! Picking up some awesome basics for cheap!! #
      • I spent $200 that day; ended up returning $60 of it (two dresses) but I was so impressed that they had nice basics for cheap. The tops are so thin though, you can see my piercings, so I can’t wear them to work!
    • Went to Apple Store. Got $30 headphones w/mic; they DO work in iTouch AT LAST. Tried several cheap mics, none worked. Naturally. #
      • I bought a $5 mike, a $12 mike, and a $15 mike. None of them worked. The $5 one had earphones that worked, but the mike part didn’t. I have no clue why none of them worked; a few were listed as being compatible with iPhone which theoretically meant they were compatible with the Touch (though using a mike-only unit means you don’t get to hear whatever sound is playing) but none of them were. It took the official $30 Apple brand to be compatible. Ah well, they seem to be not too bad, I’ve ordered little foamy caps to make them stay in my ears.
    • Also got the $20 sensor for Nike+iPod to use in my walking class this summer. (Shut up, I needed a PE credit.) Plan to cut up Payless shoes. #
      • I ended up buying a $10 sensor pocket for my regular shoes, it velcroes around the laces. I’ve been finding that the thing is quite unreliable though, sometimes it just decides to conk out and not measure anything. I’ve used Gmap Pedometer to measure the trip from here to the local shopping center; it’s about a mile, but the last time I walked it, the Nike+ only picked up 0.05mi of that! I’ve looked around online and a lot of people have this sort of problem, even if they have the expensive Nike shoes.
    • Oh praise Bob! http://i-funbox.com/ allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to get direct access to iPod_Control. Now I can upload workouts! #
      • It turns out the iPhone and iPod Touch cannot be used in Disk Mode. There are various apps that allow you to pull your music off them, but iFunbox was the one that actually let me access the directory structure of the iPod Touch. Good little program.
    • Oh my god. Restoring the iPod Touch puts all your apps back in alphabetical order. I want a computer-based icon arranger now more than ever. #
      • It turns out there are a couple of those, but they all require you to have a jailbroken device. I’m not interested in jailbreaking mine at all. I like the warranty too much, plus it’s a pain in the ass. A friend at school has an iPhone and he jailbroke it, it was pretty cool when he showed it to me but he said had so many problems that he ended up just undoing the jailbreak.
    • Just heard this good story on the radio: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2009/04/03/pm_arab_money/ #
    • RT @mactavish: Trending words on Twitter: Jenny, Autism. And it’s bad. People are buying into her dangerous nonsense. http://is.gd/qlLP #
    • See, I told you kitty was in the paper: http://www.flickr.com/photos/meredith/3412214552/ Yay! #
    • http://pect.us/xkcdtat/ -xkcd tattoo = win #
    • I am still so full of delicious cheesy goodness. I want to skip the “entree” next time though. Just cheese, salad, chocolate. #meltingpot #
      • We went to the Melting Pot and it was good but expensive. We think next time we will just try to do cheese and chocolate. Does anybody know if they allow you to do that? They make a fuss over it being a two-hour meal so I worry that having less than the full spread would cause problems for their scheduling and they might not allow it. But mmmm cheesy goodness.
    • Interweave Crochet drives me nuts. Mission Falls 1824 Cotton for a baby bib. $20+ of yarn for a BABY BIB. How about some RH Super Saver?! #
      • They are always like that, too. Interweave Crochet suggests the most expensive yarn possible, I think. I like Crochet Today or whatever other magazine it was that suggested realistic yarns. Why are people such yarn snobs? What’s wrong with Lion Brand?! But seriously, you could make the baby bib pattern with $6 of Red Heart Super Saver and it would be FINE when it got spat upon and whatnot. Hell, you could probably do it with $6 of Lily Sugar n Cream too. It’s a baby bib for crying out loud, you don’t want to use expensive yarn with that!

  • FYI, this is not me: http://is.gd/nsdc – I don’t ride the CUE bus. #
    • That’s from PostSecret, of course. I recognize the exact place where that photo was taken. But yeah, totally was not sent by me, I don’t ride the CUE!
  • Watching Intervention; lady is praying for her son to get better. It’s not working, she’s breaking down. Newsflash: PRAYING ISN’T ENOUGH. #
    • I can’t help watching Intervention. I used to watch it for personal reasons, I think now I just watch it for the same reason I watch Cops occasionally. Watching car wrecks and being glad my life isn’t like that. And, in some cases, Intervention reminds me how easy it is to slip and fall…there are honor students, beloved wifes and mothers, etc. And it just happens that they fall into addiction. Never feel like you’re safe, be grateful for each day…that’s what I learn from watching Intervention. But that episode was tough, this lady was so upset that her prayer wasn’t working. She wanted so much for God to fix her son, and she didn’t understand why it wasn’t working.
  • My father in law reports they are getting a $25,000 refund this year. What I could do with that!! #
    • Let’s see…finish my education, travel, buy a car, so many things. Unfortunately my in-laws are getting it due to massive amounts of medical work (partially elective, heh) and massive amounts of losses in the financial crashingnesses.
  • You know, the EPA-East building at 11th and Constitution is really quite beautiful. #ilovedc #

  • all hail @supalaze whose blog “One Sentence” just won the bloggie for Best Microblog!! #
    • I just gotta give another shoutout for One Sentence! I’ve known Ryan since the first Blogathon many years ago and I am tickled that he won a Bloggie, the most prestigious web award out there – it’s no Tony or Emmy, but it’s the blog equivalent!
  • Google Reader is the best app for blogs, eh? More so than WordPress? Guess I should check it out. #
    • I’m now using it as my primary blog reader. I decided to just make the switch and ditch Bloglines and head over there. After doing the OPML export and importing it into Google Reader, I deleted everything from Bloglines so now I’m switched. Can people see when I star stuff, though?

  • Oh god, I made the mistake of conversing with a guy who thinks he can sign. Nothing is more sobering and terrifying than that. #
    • This was at Monday night showtunes. It was pretty funny now that I look back on it. My friends were cracking up and I was occasionally throwing out signs begging them for help. Of course the guy didn’t notice at all because he had skills of about an ASL 3 or 4 student, nothing approaching fluency, despite claiming to have a bachelor’s in ASL and being an interpreter etc. The guy was clueless!
  • There’s a plaque on a rock next to the Old Canal House. It’s just a rock, but it gets a plaque! #ilovedc #
    • There’s so many little things around DC that are worth noting. The Old Canal House I’m referring to is located here (that is an awesome site for finding out more about all the little interesting things in DC!) and you can read more about it in the first item here. Of course it shouldn’t be confused with the Old Stone House. But anyway, one of these days I will have to go check out this little adjacent rock and see what its plaque is about.

  • Just booked flight and car from Honolulu to Kona 4/25/09 – we’re going to see a live volcano! Just a one day trip. So cool. :) #
    • Our flight from Honolulu takes off at 9:10am and our flight back from Kona lands at 9:10pm. In between we will go to Hawaii Volcano National Park! We are going to rent a car to drive around the park, and that way we’ll be able to grab some food easily. It’s going to be a total of $250 for both of our air tickets and the rental car, which is much better than the $250/person for the one day interisland tours you can get.

  • I have stuffed myself full of an entire package of Tofurkey lunchmeat. That oughta satisfy the fake meat craving for a day or two. #
    • Yeah, um, that has had some other effects too. Oh my. But it was SO GOOD. Tofurkey is definitely the best lunchmeat. Yves is good and cheaper and in more regular stores but Tofurkey is so much tastier.

This is just to say….

Good heavens! I just remembered I have not updated this since people stopped clapping and Tinkerbell died… You would not believe that I’d been abducted by aliens. Please don’t abandon me!.

I am hopped up on caffeine with an awfully big adventure, selling my soul to Google, just generally being the life of the party to anyone unfortunate to cross my path, my day seems to involve the authorities from dawn to whenever. I am totally loving it, dudes. I wish you could be here to share it.

I totally promise I will blog about it when I find my way home. No, really! What do you mean you don’t believe me?.

  • On my way out the door, I told kitty to go to class for me so I could go back to sleep. She was having none of it. #
  • I will always recognize Jonathan Banks first as Gheorghe Comaneci from the 1984 TV movie Nadia. #
    • I wrote this while watching him on an episode of Star Trek, but a couple of days later I ended up buying the movie on DVD on eBay. Woot!
  • http://twitpic.com/1vepa – Size 16 capris at the thrift store, ACK!! #
  • For years and years I thought the host of Science Friday was Ira Plato. Now that I have hearing aids, I have learned that it starts with F! #
  • Amazon box arrived. Bubble bath leaked; destroyed book. Griffin Lapel Mic not working w/iPod touch after all. Whole shipment a total wash. #
  • New ARG based on Dollhouse: http://www.rprimelab.com #
  • Just discovered Orson Scott Card’s disgusting homophobic views, AFTER finishing Songmaster. So ridiculous. Love the sinner indeed. #

I haven’t posted in my blog in weeks, but nobody has commented on that fact. Has my blog reached the end of its life? :(

  • I think every little gust of wind is a car in the driveway. Not so good with sound differentiation, I guess. #
  • Back of sweater is now done! Shape is a little funky but I think blocking will fix it. Now I have to do it all over again for the front. #
  • Placed an order with a Canadian online pharmacy because I’ve maxed out my prescription benefit and it’s cheaper that way. Hope it works out! #
  • I’m just not the “study obsessively” type. If you know it, you know it. I glance through the book for refreshers but that’s all, usually. #
  • Snipshot.com appears to have gone pro-only. That sucks, I really liked it for quick cropping/resizing jobs. #
  • About the ban at Dover: GIVE FAMILIES THE CHOICE. This isn’t rocket science. #
  • There is a little concrete step thing behind the Old Canal House at 17th and Constitution, I wonder what that is for? #
  • There must be 100 geese roaming the grounds of the Washington Monument. Grass looks old and dead but they’re nibbling anyway. #
  • An experiment in Twitter’s ultimate banality: I just worked a piece of broccoli free from between teeth! Been bothering me since dinner! #
  • Wow…the Samwell song “What What (In the Butt)” is captioned on YouTube. Somebody captioned that thing. Now everyone can enjoy the horror. #
  • I got accepted into the Deaf Studies major here at Gallaudet. YAY ME! #
  • Time for my annual tweet about wanting to go to North Korea for tourism and Arirang Games. Now you’re all supposed to tell me I’m crazy. #
  • North Korea is one of the world’s last great mysteries…something most of the world cannot even fathom. Plus Arirang Games are SO COOL. #
  • Sweet. Coinstar machine took all my coins and I have a $157.08 Amazon gift certificate. It’s free to count if you use Amazon instead of cash #
  • Just finished taxes. TurboTax says my federal refund is $1120 and I owe Virginia $106. Itemizing deductions was the way to go this year. #

  • Lordy, it has been 15-20 years since I’ve used microfilm. Had to have the librarian show me how. #
  • Wow, deaf-school teachers were molesting their students as early as 1875. And it’s still happening. #
  • Radio quote: “President Obama is more popular than leprechauns and unicorns.” #
  • Oh my god, Bolt Browser is super sexy on the Blackberry Curve. Extremely slow, but sexy. #
  • I guess I should comment. I’m actually rather stung by the death of Socks the cat. I guess I thought he’d never die. He is missed by many. #
