Fun Blog Domains

Jan 13, 2005 Author: Meredith | Filed under: blogging

I was feeling a bit irritated about a few things, so I figured I’d take a break and play a little game. My registrar, Dotster, has a cool search engine where you can put in any word and find interesting available URLs related to that word. (Upon logging in, I also discovered that I had been given enchantedforestmd.info for free because I have enchantedforestmd.org already. Ha!) Anyway, I typed “blog” into the search engine to see what it kicked back. There were thousands of results, of course, so I went through the first ten pages to see what was fun. As far as I can tell these are all available to register!

BlogClicker vs. BlogExplosion

Jan 13, 2005 Author: Meredith | Filed under: websites

I just signed up with BlogClicker and I’ve been playing with it for a bit. I find that I still prefer BlogExplosion, though, for several reasons.

BC lacks a countdown clock; I haven’t bothered to actually time the wait. I find clicking on a picture much more confusing than clicking on a number. I really don’t like that the BC bar switches between the top and bottom. The BE bar isn’t nearly as obtrusive as the BC bar, because the latter acts more like an annoying banner ad on a webpage - it detracts much more from the blog I’m actually trying to read. I don’t care about the ratings on BE - I very rarely rate sites - but I do like the BlogMarking feature. I don’t like the slot machine opportunity to win mystery credits; I prefer BE’s method of giving me credits when I win them and otherwise not interrupting my surfing.

I’m going to continue using BC, though, because I do want to give it a chance to improve. It’s only been around for a few days (apparently), and BE’s been around for a few months. We’ll see how things go.

Awards

Dec 30, 2004 Author: Meredith | Filed under: blogging

Damn! I didn’t make it into the final round for any categories I was nominated into (for Amanita.net or CyDy Blog) in the Best of Blog Awards 2004. I was really hoping to, for two reasons: this is a really cool version of blogging awards, and also the prizes were awesome! I was pleased to find I Ate A Pie in the finalist list for Best Weight Loss/Fitness and Mistress Matisse in the finalists for Best Sex. I don’t really recognize any of the others, and I don’t know any of the blogs in the Best LGBT category.

Do you suppose there will be a “editor’s choice” category? Maybe I can still hold out hope!

Today’s Update

Dec 20, 2004 Author: Meredith | Filed under: daily life

I forgot my purse today, which made for a rather boring day at work. Specifically, I was unable to get lunch, and there was nobody to borrow money from; fortunately there was a dollar in my desk so I was at least able to get something. But that wasn’t much, so I was starving by the time I got home!

I noticed that I made it into sexblo.gs! My earlier mention of the Lovehotels site has become a sexblo.gs entry. I was so proud of myself that I took a screenshot - how geeky is that? Now if only I could afford to put a CyDy Blog ad on sexblo.gs, I’d be all set.

It is fucking cold here today. It was six degrees when I left the house this morning, and the wind chill was five below! It was all I could do to stumble from my car to my office and back again. Now that I’m home again, I’m wearing long underwear beneath my pajamas, and I am absolutely dreading putting out the trash tonight. Yesterday was warmer than today, tomorrow will be warmer than today…why does tonight have to be trash night?!

Crystal and the Lesbian

I was checking my referrers and I noticed a few people had gotten to me from Crystal’s site. It turns out my automated TrackBack caught Crystal’s eye, and she felt the need to respond and let me (and everybody else) know that she doesn’t agree with my beliefs. That’s perfectly okay with me, because diversity is what makes the world go around. And yet I couldn’t help noticing one of the Blogsnob ads on her site:

Yup. Crystal’s site displayed a link to one of my new favorite blogs, SistersTalk. Click the picture to enlarge. Too awesome!

Best of Blog Awards 2004

Dec 13, 2004 Author: Meredith | Filed under: blogging

There’s another blogging awards contest, the Best of Blog Awards. Unlike the 2004 Weblog Awards and the Bloggies, this one is focused on smaller blogs. The rules explicitly state that if a blog receives thousands of hits per day, it won’t be considered as a finalist. (The Anti-Bloggies have gone the way of the dodo.)

You can’t nominate yourself at all, so I came up with other nominees. Please feel free to nominate my main blog in any category you like, Cyber Dyke Blog in best LGBT or best sex, or DietGrrl in best weight loss. I would love to win that free hosting, free porting, and especially the free custom site design! (Yes, I realize this paragraph also qualifies me for biggest blog whore.)

Weblog Awards

Nov 23, 2004 Author: Meredith | Filed under: blogging

Hey, I finally heard about the Weblog Awards nominations in time to get myself in there! I love voting, but I always wondered how the sites got nominated. Thanks to Aurorealis, now I know! Nominations are made here in all the usual categories. I’d love to see myself up there for Best LGBT Blog but I’m going to nominate CyDy Blog for that instead! (Queer Day and Swirlspice have already been nominated - darn! I’d have liked to name them, but multiple nominations supposedly mean nothing.)

Diet Grrl

Nov 22, 2004 Author: Meredith | Filed under: diet

I started a new blog, bringing me to a total of three blogs I write, on three subjects. There’s Amanita.net (the main site, mirrored at LiveJournal), the still-fairly-new CyDy Blog (part of the Cyber Dyke Network), and my brand-spanking-new Diet Grrl (it’s pronounced like riot grrl…get it?).

Yes, it is a weight loss blog. Those aren’t always interesting, but I’m not necessarily writing it for a huge audience. In fact, I’m pretty much only writing it for me. I do, however, welcome friends to read it (there’s an Atom feed available) and comment if they are so inclined. It’s at Blogspot because I already had that account (since early 2001, actually) and I figured I might as well do something with it, but I wanted to keep it separate from my own domain. So if you’re a friend, and you’re interested, feel free to visit Diet Grrl…but don’t feel obligated, because you’re not! It’s just my own babble about my diet.
