Question of the Week

Mar 9, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Here’s the current Question of the Week:
Do you have any quirky or odd eating combinations? (Like fries in a Wendy’s frosty?) Tell us about that. Or are you extremely picky about what you eat? What do you not like, cannot stand? Or both? It’s okay if you have answers to both!
I absolutely won’t eat mushrooms, raw or cooked. I try to have cooked ones on a pizza or in Chinese food from time to time, but I just do not like them. I’ve tried fries in a Wendy’s Frosty (why is that popular, anyway?!), but I can’t think of anything in particular that I like that’s quirky. My girlfriend’s weirdest combinations are a salad of beets, cottage cheese, cucumber, and bleu cheese; and a peanut-butter-and-bacos sandwich.

Friday Five

Mar 7, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Because I am exhausted, and because the Weekly Wrapup doesn’t seem to be up yet, I’m going to keep it simple and just do the Friday Five for now. I tend to think 1-2-3-4-5 setups like this (last four things, next three things, etc.) are terrible as writing prompts, but right now they feel just right.

1. What was the last song you heard?
“Landslide,” as covered by the Dixie Chicks, because it was just on VH1’s Pop-Up Video.

Question of the Week

Mar 2, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Sara’s current question:
We have all heard the Old Wives Tales, “they say” things and the superstitions. List at least 3, you can list more if you want, of things you have heard. For instance: They say it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day.

Actually, I thought that was from an Alanis Morissette song. But anyway:

  1. Don’t let a cat sleep with your baby, it will steal the baby’s breath away.
  2. If you dream somebody you know has died, they will get married soon. (Also: if you dream somebody you know is getting married, they will die soon.)
  3. Be careful when throwing away your hair (i.e., from the brush). If a bird makes a nest from it, you will go crazy.

Question of the Week

Feb 23, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Uh-oh, another weekly meme! I didn’t have any for Sundays anyway, so how about Sara’s Questions of the Week? This week’s question:
List 5 people dead or alive you would want stranded with you on a desert island for 3 weeks. You probably want to choose people that are rugged, built for survival and can hunt down food for you and the others. Your best friend may be nice to talk to, but, can they survive in the wilderness?

  1. My girlfriend A, no doubt about it. I’ve been separated from her for long stretches before, and I hate it.
  2. My close friend C. He’s not only a good friend, but he really does have skills that would be useful on a desert island. The man constantly amazes me with the stuff he knows.
  3. k.d. lang. It would be good to have nice music to listen to while working on survival!
  4. My friend _R_ so I would have somebody to chat with in ASL, just for the practice. He’s also a good friend and it would be nice to have him along.
  5. Can I bring a cat? I think Amanita would be best-suited to that kind of environment. She’s very affectionate and loves petting, which would be comforting. She’s also got hunting skills, but knows better than to bring her prey in the house!

Weekly Wrapup

Feb 21, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

The current Weekly Wrapup is about illness. Ugh!

1. How often do you get sick? Are there particular times of the year when this happens? If so, when?
I don’t get sick very often - which is lucky, given that I don’t usually get flu shots. When I do get sick, it’s more often related to the company I’ve been keeping than the time of year.

Monday Mission

Feb 19, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Yeah, I know I’m late - it’s hard to keep track of days when you’re snowed in and can’t get to work!

1. What do you like to eat for breakfast? Do you even eat breakfast?
I usually eat breakfast before leaving for work. I most often have a cup of yogurt, unless I have some extra time - then I have a bowl or two of cereal. I also bring something extra along in the car when I’m driving to work; sometimes an apple and sometimes one of those milk-and-cereal bars. (The Cocoa Puffs kind taste like Oreos, and none of the flavors has more than 4 WW points.)

Weekly Wrapup

Feb 15, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

I finished this last night but didn’t get it posted then; it’s the current Weekly Wrapup.

1. Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Why or why not?
My girlfriend and I do celebrate Valentine’s Day. I know some people feel it’s a Hallmark holiday, but it’s a nice excuse to have dinner out and fun at home (!).

Friday Five

Feb 3, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Yeah, I know it’s Monday. So sue me! Here’s the most recent Friday Five, which I answered this morning in my notepad while the students were taking a test.

1. As a child, who was your favorite superhero/heroine? Why?
I don’t remember paying a lot of attention to that kind of thing. The only one that even comes to mind is She-Ra (Princess of Power!), though I’m aware of a few other names. The most unique superhero I remember - at least the one who defied the typical definition of a superhero - is Captain Planet.

Weekly Wrapup

Jan 31, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

The last Weekly Wrapup of January. For the sake of clearer answers, I’m going to use “blog” even though I write a journal/blog.

1. Why do you blog?
To be honest, I’m not sure. I like the idea that there are people out there who read what I’ve written. I’ve always loved writing, and blogging gives me an audience. I also blog to keep my mother more up-to-date on my life, though nobody else from real life reads my journal (as far as I know).

Weekly Wrapup

Jan 25, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Whee, I’m only a day late with the current Weekly Wrapup.

1. Have you ever been nominated for a blogging award? Which one? What happened?
I think I got nominated for one of the Kevin’s Blog Bloggys, but I probably put my own name in. I certainly never won!
