Half Work, Half Play

Posted by on April 19, 2009

This morning I was up at 7am for no reason. Oh well. :A: was up too, but she had to leave for work about 8am anyway. When she left, I went downstairs too and walked across the street to the beach. I walked around for a few minutes, and then my phone rang – :A: was too early, nobody was there yet, and so she came down and hung out with me for a while – avoiding the sand so she didn’t get it in her shoes and then track it into the conference area. When it was time for her to go back, I headed back to do homework. I got a snack at the ABC Store because I like to munch while I work; at home I usually go for carrot sticks or something like that, but the closest they had was really expensive fruit salad. So I got jalapeño cheetos instead, figuring (correctly) that I would eat them slowly because they were on the hot side.

I spent the morning knocking out a four-page sociology paper, beginning to end. :A: called to let me know she was done for the day and would be coming back to the room, and I finished up my paper as she arrived. It turned out she had been given the task of fetching Subway sandwiches for the group, so I got dressed and went with her and got my own lunch there. She brought the sandwiches back to the bigwigs, and came back to eat hers with me. We were so lucky that she wasn’t tied up until 3pm like we expected, we got to do stuff today!

We caught the CityExpress bus (so much nicer than the main, non-express bus) and went to the Bishop Museum. I think you wouldn’t even need a car here if you lived near a bus line, it seems you can go anywhere on TheBus! We were disappointed that the Hawaiian Hall of the museum was closed for renovations (they charged full price anyway) but we got to see most of the rest of it, including the very cool Science on a Sphere exhibit and the Science Adventure Center. We stayed until the museum closed and didn’t quite get to see everything, but it was still fun!

We took the bus back to Waikiki and got off at Kuhio and Kalakaua. My geography teacher, who didn’t bat an eye about me taking off for a week at the end of the semester, had recommended a Thai restaurant there called Keo’s. It turns out the Yelp reviews were terrible, but we didn’t know that and we had an excellent time! I made sure to leave a five-star review to counteract the bad ones. I had a great drink called the “Hawaiian Surfer” which didn’t match anything I’ve seen on the web…this version had melon liqueur and Frangelico, plus some other stuff that I don’t remember – we plan to go back later this week so I will have to look then! At any rate, it was nutty and fruity at the same time, and I loved it.

Even though it was now the end of a long day, we decided to walk back the 0.8 miles to our hotel (thank you Google Maps Mobile for allowing us to decide if we wanted to take the bus or not!). Unfortunately we ended up walking longer than that, because we stopped in a few of the shops along the way. Most were designer stores – Gucci, Armani, Coach, blah blah – but a few were interesting. There was a Crocs store and I got to try on the newer styles beyond their standard beach shoes, but I didn’t really like they way they looked and/or felt. I’m not a fan of the standard shoes, but their new styles are intriguing. Kalakaua Ave at night is quite similar to Hollywood Boulevard in LA, in that it’s full of people doing services and shows to make a buck. There was a guy with some parrots, and it was “pay what you can” to have your picture taken with them! He took several pictures of me with the parrots and it was great. They’re in my Hawaii set already!

Definitely a good day; it was nice that :A: got out of work early so we could go play, especially since I finished my paper at the same time she finished work!
