I’m exhausted and falling asleep at the keyboard but I wanted to make a quick note. It seems like nobody in my sociology class is equipped for normal adult debate. I’m not talking about debate team type debate, just having simple discussions in class. Today one student and I – he’s also an older student – were arguing whether race can be considered subculture (my view) or counterculture (his view). The conversation progressed to illegal immigrants, and from there I said that what we needed was immigration reform. Several other kids immediately chimed in with “no way! we can’t do that!” etc. So I said: “Why?” And not one of them had a single answer. Come on people, this is college. Wake up and think!
The guy I was initially arguing with spoke to me after class and said that he enjoys passionate, reasoned debate. The only difference I saw between the two of us is that he is much more inflexible in his views…if someone points out something that I realize is a good point, I’m willing to accept that maybe I was wrong.
But anyway, yeah, kids are not really thinkers in that class. Sigh.
If a guy having an argument for the sake of arguing there is no defeating him. Just post your points to the arbiter and pray he will notice you sorry dude but there is no defeating people like that.
