I just bought a fancy new phone. A very fancy, state of the art, not crippled by T-Mobile, phone. I bought a Blackberry Curve 8310 in Titanium, and it is my dream phone. At first my wife said I absolutely couldn’t buy it, but she finally relented! Instead of getting me a PS2 for my birthday (she’s running a tad late on it), she is contributing the $90 cost of a PS2 to my purchase of the phone. I got an AT&T version off eBay, and you can buy unlock codes on eBay too, so I will be unlocking it and putting my T-Mobile SIM card into it.
My bill will go up by $5-15 when I switch to the Blackberry plan, because it doesn’t include unlimited texts like the Sidekick, so you have to pick the 400 ($5), 1000 ($10), or unlimited ($15) text plans. I got it on a trial basis, from a seller who accepts returns for any reason for 7 days. When I had the T-Mobile Dash a few months ago, I knew within a few days that I didn’t like it, so I think I will know for this, too. If I decide to keep it, I have to sell both my GPS device (there’s one in the phone) and my Sidekick 3 (don’t need two phones). It won’t be SUPER easy to do geocaching with the Blackberry – there’s no ideal application for it yet – but it is possible.
The phone has everything I want except WiFi, and I don’t really NEED that because I’ll have the unlimited data plan and I have cell coverage everywhere except my house. But we might be moving to my in-laws’ house soon (we are still house-sitting, but we are going to ask if we can stay in the spare room where we are now) so I don’t have to worry about it, they have cell coverage here.
I’ve toyed with the idea of a Blackberry or Sidekick, but once the iPhone came out, I knew that was the gizmo for me. As a Mac user, it also makes complete sense… alas, the price is a bit too high and I’m also a T-Mobile user so I must wait a bit longer.
Enjoy the new gadget!
Hey Meredith!
Haha, you finally got rid of your sidekick! They are fun, but I couldn’t stand the way Tmobile crippled the device back in the first couple years it was out, and I guess that hasn’t changed?
I know this might be too late, but I wanted to suggest that instead of the Blackberry, that you consider getting yourself a Sprint SERO account, if aren’t locked into AT&T for much longer. For $30/month/person, you get unlimited data, 450 minutes of talk time, free mobile-mobile (sprint-sprint), free nights and weekends, etc., etc. You can opt for more expensive plans for more minutes too, if you need to. All this and you get a subsidy on a phone, and they have many to choose from. The only problem is that Blackberries add an additional $30 or $40 per month! I’ve had good success with my Treo 700wx, which is a Windows Mobile phone. You can hack it quite a bit, which I hear isn’t as feasible with the Blackberry. In fact, the BB is also kind of a closed system, whereas Palm and Windows Mobile are both much more open and hackable. There is a new Treo coming out for Sprint soon that I’m hoping to get which will have a ton more stuff, including wifi, gps, a2dp (stereo bluetooth), and the next level of broadband (EVDO Revision A). The 700wx has EVDO as well, but this new version will be faster in order to support better streaming, VOIP, etc. Does your BB even have more than EDGE data?
Anyway, just a thought. If you are interested in SERO, let me know and I can give you more details.

out with your old side kick. I also switched from a side kick to a crackberry. ANd i would never go back. My new blackberry curve is fantastic!
Me too, since using a Blackberry, I could never go back. As far as email, there is no better phone then a Blackberry.
Enjoy
David
The blackberries are very cool phones. The physical keyboard is probably much better for text input than the virtual keyboard on modern touch-based devices. Congrats on your new phone!
Blackberry will always have one hand up on the iphone and vice versa . .
blackberry is the only phone that you can copy text from one or any application and paste it into a chat or email or whatever application you choose, iphone for some wierd reason does not have this . . .
iphone is way more youtube friendly and website surfing friendly using the safari browser . . .
so as far as business i cannot live without my blackberry and thats why i ditched my iphone, BUT i purchase a Ipod touch so surfing, music, and youtube videos are great via wifi, but i use my blackberry for all communications
I’ve just switched my phone contract from a standard monthly contract to a Blackberry contract. Because I was a loyal customer I got given the choice of a Blackberry Storm or a Blackberry Curve. I chose the Storm as I thought the screen would be better than the pearl trackball. It definitely takes some getting used to.
I wouldn’t worry about the lack of wifi – it really drains the batteries quickly and is really irritating as it seems to drop in and out all the time.
I found a bb curve 8310 on the side of the road and I just put a t-mobile sim card in it.It works great but, when I get online it won’t let me stream anything it says bad gateway.Does anybody else have this problem,I know this use to be a at&t phone. Please help
hai,
It’s really nice mobile. My friend got this mobile. And she bought the code and instructions from
Its a superb phone, very professional and classy blackberry. I love the curve.
One more happy Curve owner! This is an excellent mobile phone, for real… I am a huge BlackBerry fan too.
You’ve mentioned a built-in GPS device and geocaching? There ARE BlackBerry apps to do this – for example from this company
I wonder why Blackberry love to offer new models but with some drawbacks? Example; when they’re offering the Curve 8520 I was so facinated by it’s size as it is about the size of my Nokia E71. However, this model doesn’t come with GPS (I don’t really mind about this feature), but more importantly, it does not support 3G, let alone HSDPA or higher speed? Just imagine how unfortunate those users who are getting the 3G Unlimited Data Plan without knowing that their phone only support GPRS!
I think that blackberry is one of the best cell phone makers today – i love blackberry a lot more then iphone, nokia and others… i use blackberry storm 2… used the old pearl before but gave it to my GF after i upgraded to the storm 2… was interesting to read your post – keep on posting.
