Apparently we register for spring classes at the end of October, so I looked for the schedule online. I found it, and I put together this possible schedule.
There’s also a possibility of working HSL 690, Intro to Cued Speech, into my schedule, but the times haven’t been announced yet so I don’t know if I’ll get to do it. If not, I can put it off for another time. History and Sociology are both required for the Deaf Studies major, and as for DST 101…well, at the beginning of fall 2007 I was told that GSR 103 (which I’m taking now) would replace DST 101 and I wouldn’t have to take it, but I’m looking at the major requirements and I probably will have to after all. I wasn’t able to find a way into either of JKF’s sections, the schedules just clash with everything else…I think it would have been pretty interesting to have her as a teacher, though I’m not sure she should be teaching intro-level classes considering how controversial she is. (IKJ is coming back too but he’s teaching high-level Psych courses.)
This isn’t set in stone obviously, but I like the way it shapes up so far. Three classes on Tu/Th, one on M/W, and none on Fridays. That would leave room for plenty of working hours, which I haven’t gotten nearly enough of these past few weeks.
The BP Solar Decathlon just ended, with the team from Technische Universität Darmstadt taking first place. The contest involved 10 teams from around North America and Europe, all competing to build the most efficient solar house. Each team was made up of students from a variety of disciplines, including architecture, engineering, economics, and more. Once relegated to the land of hippies, solar power is once again receiving attention as the impact of global warming is felt around the world. This was the third decathlon since the event was founded in 2002, and as in previous years, teams built their solar houses at home, tested them, and then transported them to the National Mall to form a solar village. Their task was to run their entire house using only energy from the sun. Visitors to the Mall were able to interact with the teams there and check out the houses themselves. The event was sponsored by BP, which offers residential solar solutions to help make every house solar-powered. You can get a quote online, or visit your local Home Depot for information on purchasing a BP solar system. (It is unlikely, though, that the store itself will be solar-powered, even though BP does offer business solutions as well.)
I was so tired last night from my mom’s 60th birthday party, that I slept most of the way home (had to switch drivers in Silver Spring to make this possible) and then once we got home around 6:00, I slept all through the night. As a result I am hungry and kind of grumpy this morning, but I have to leave for work in an hour and 15 minutes or so.
I had so much fun at the Academic Bowl game today. I had totally forgotten what it was like to do academic competition. I need to play more Trivial Pursuit or something! The coach was impressed with my enthusiasm; when we’d met in his office he thought I was quiet and reserved, but he saw that in competition I’m a firecracker! I did pretty well - I only played the second round, but I got most of the answers in the first round and most of them in the second round too! At least I think I did, I didn’t keep count. But it was so amazing, I loved it. Afterward I commented to the other players and the coach, “this was so much fun, I wish I could compete on the regular team!” The coach said “well, we could box your ears and then you could join us!” We all laughed.
I got to do a bit of interpreting today, about 10 minutes, and that was also terrific. I miss one-on-one interpreting a lot, too…VRS isn’t the same, and I don’t even do that very often. Afterward my friend apologized for needing me to interpret, and I said “seriously, I loved it, don’t even worry about it, okay?” He seemed to be okay with that.
I am tired. Sleepy.
I realized the last couple of posts didn’t make it elsewhere because I had turned off both transfer plugins while I was tagging a bunch of old entries. Duh. They should be caught up now.
I had a fun time with my friend Robert tonight. I love him like bees love a flower.
Tomorrow I will be participating in the Alumni Bowl contest, playing for the “current students” team against the 1957 and 1982 teams. I’ve done some brushing up on my 1957 factoids but I haven’t done anything on 1982 yet. Oh well, I have a few free hours tomorrow, I’ll do it then. I was actually invited to be on the College Bowl team, but hearing students can’t participate in actual Academic Bowl activities, so I have to stick to the informal stuff.
I just looked through all the previous Academic Bowl teams and I am surprised how many of my friends were on them! I had no idea I had such a wonderful group of nerds around me. I loved It’s Academic, which is basically the same thing. Academic teams rock!
Excellent! I got my invite for I Want Sandy and I’m signed up. It looks like it will work similar to Vitalist and other similar GTD software, but it seems to be much more flexible. I’m not sure if there is a mobile version of the site, though she can send reminders by text message. I think I can send invitations now, but I’m not sure. I think I’ve already invited two friends, because I happened to spot them on the InviteShare listing of Sandy hopefuls.
