Let’s Get Commenting!

As part of my attempt to increase my PR again (a sick little game), I’m opening up commenting on my site. Well, comments have always been open, but this time I’ve installed DoFollow, a plugin that eliminates the rel=”nofollow” attribute on comments, meaning search engines will actually follow those links.

I got the idea from Marghil’s offer, which does the same thing – he’s got DoFollow installed and is basically offering free links by allowing people to comment on his site. I have long felt that I don’t get nearly enough commenters over here; I get plenty of comment spam but very, very few actual comments. (Most posts have no comments at all.) So I’m hoping that by allowing search engines to follow links, people will be tempted to post comments.

It would be really super nice to see others doing this too. If you post a link to your blog, I’ll gladly come over and comment…and hopefully you will have installed DoFollow too, so we can link mutually to each other. Mostly I just want comments, but I do still want to increase my PR (my long-lasting PR6 is now a sad little PR4) so it would be great if we could link back to each other. Whee!

Great idea and well it definetely works for me

Hope it al works out for ya and lots of people start commenting on your posts. :)

kiviniar: Cool, thanks! I can’t leave a comment on your blog right now because I’m at work, and YouTube is blocked so I can’t see what all your cool videos are. But I’ll check them out when I get home!

Kat: Whew, thanks so much for commenting! I’m hoping it will entice a few more people out of the woodwork at least. We’ll see!

I think it was the math keeping me from commenting before :-)

I have do follow on all of my blogs and love it.

Oh! I had no idea people were having issues with the math. I was using it because it’s a more accessible form of captcha that blind people can use…but I can change it to something that’s easier to do. I had problems with math when I was in school too, so I really should know better!

Thanks for commenting, Colleen!

I seem to have more comments now that I have Do Follow installed. I also added Top Commentators and Latest Comments too, so I am not sure what is increasing the comments, but I’ll take it.

I will have to check this out, looks interesting. nice flickr photos. :)

I’m thinking about using WP instead of MT — any tips or tricks or plugins you might recommend?

Great idea. I don’t use Do follow yet, but I have “comment plugger” on my site that leave a linked name for each person that leaves a comment on a post directly under the post and those links do follow.

I use top commentator too and it’s also a do follow plugin. I’ve also found that since I installed it in the middle of March that I’ve been getting a few more comments each month because my visitors are competitive and they want to be on that top 10 list. LOL Maybe you should try that too?

Hehe! I love your new CAPTCHA thingie!

Earlier today I was wondering what Emily Dickinson would do with a blog.

I do not know you, but I have read so many of your words, seen so many pictures.

I am too old to “get it”–but then, I don’t get ostracods either.

But I know what I like–and I am glad you share photons.

Meredith if you’re going to take over from my version of the d-list the post is here:

add your do follow blogs to it. :)

This is a good idea, I will have to think about doing this, I’m just such a chicken to try new things, but it might be worth it if it gets my site more comments. By the way, I really love your new spam catcher question I’ve never seen anything like that.

Thanks for the link! After putting the DoFollow plugin, people started commenting. =)

This sounds like a good idea — I hope it brings your PR up! Feel free to include a link back here in any comment in my blog. :-)

Looks like it is working. You got loads of comments on this post.

Do you know if blogger has this? I am not really sure what it is.

Blogspot does use nofollow. The reason for using it is so that spammers can’t get free links to their site just by leaving a comment on your blog. When nofollow is active, the search engine sees it and says “oh, let’s pretend this link isn’t here.” I’m not sure if there’s a way to disable nofollow on Blogspot, I don’t see one in the options there. Sorry!

I think putting the number of comments by your coomments link might help get more comments. By looking at the front page of your blog, I thought that there are no comments to your post at all. And it seems to me people tend not to start the discussion…

I added this script to my blog as well and comments increased slightly. Of course, there are some from people who just want the backlinsk, too. I was really going after making my blog more interactive, more of a community.

Good on you for adding the script. :)

I just got news that this’d earn me more comments and traffic so I’ll see soon, thanks heaps!

I just installed the plugin too. Wish to get more comment like you do. :)

Engagement on blogs will always be the secret if you want to call it one. Much success to everyone online!

Get commenting!

I found your blog after doing a quick google search after reading something somewhere else.

I didn’t know about the dofollow plugin – thanks for the link! I’ve downloaded it, and once I get home and back to my comp (with its FTP access) I’ll give it a go.

Thanks again!
