Pink for October
Wow, I’m tired! I had a good time today at Shore Leave; I interpreted for pretty much the same people as yesterday. I also interpreted a “Terrorism in Trek” discussion that was pretty weird, because the moderators couldn’t come up with any examples of the subject matter! The masquerade contest last night was pretty good; I got several compliments on my dress. Unfortunately the deaf woman who was going to participate decided to drop out at the last minute, but she did win a workmanship award (”best first costume”) because those are decided beforehand by judges who scrutinize every aspect of the costume. The joke I was going to play on Steve Bacic backfired - I’d been planning to sneak up onstage and then follow him around the stage, but he didn’t move off the stool! Yesterday he was all over the place, but today he was just parked on that chair - oh well. I did buy a picture ($6 from a dealer upstairs) of him and I got it autographed. The two deaf women and the other interpreter and I all presented him with a copy of a packet with some sex-related signs, because he’d been trying to get me to sign them on Saturday! (That’s not the only thing he did to me, but I’ll have to write about that when I’m not so tired.) He thought they were just hilarious, and Jeffrey Willerth overheard the laughter from the next table and he wanted a copy too! So while another copy was made, he signed my copy. We then went over to share with Alexis Cruz, and I wanted him to sign the same paper…but his handler said he won’t sign anything for less than $15. Jeez! So I bought one of his photographs for $20 (good grief) and he signed it. Then we went to show Danny Strong, and one of the deaf women bought a picture of him for me (also $20) and he signed that. I think there is probably lots more I could tell but I’m pretty tired, so I will call it a night and tell more tomorrow!
One Response for "Sunday at Shore Leave"
Haha you forgot to mention that I dropped out of the masquerade in favour of going to the bar
In all actuality, I had spent 12 hours in a costume that consisted of a long sleeve turtleneck shirt with a hood under a long velvet dress with a hood in 90 degree weather… I was hot and sticky and had been waiting in a small cramped room with about 30 other people with only a fan to cool us off…not to mention one of the people in the masquerade (Sporkman) tried to convince me that my Japor snippet was pretty awful and that I should buy one of his (HAH!) so that just added to my crankiness. I’m beginning to think we should have had Steve Bacic sing Happy Birthday to me in Sign Language
Oh well there’s always next year… All in all a good time was had by most everyone and the sex signs was the highlight of the weekend and is a story that will be told, at least by me, for many years to come!
As for Saturday morning, I went to the Star Wars panel, and as soon as I got there, someone started dissing my favourite scene from Revenge of the Sith (Where Obi-Wan yells “You were the chosen one! It was said you would destroy the Sith, NOT JOIN THEM! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness! You were my brother Anakin, I loved you”) and I went off on him…apparently he didn’t understand why Obi-Wan left him alive blah blah blah…it was all in the book! How are you supposed to run a panel on a subject you haven’t fully researched! Not quite as bad as the terrorism in Trek panel, but I said my spiel about it and left the room with one of my friends hehe. Turns out I’m going to be on the Star Wars: Expanded Universe (the books and graphic novels) panel at Dragon*Con…if you find out about interpreters there, please let me know so I can talk with them ahead of time about this panel…I COULD handle it without one, but it makes life SO much easier and a lot less confusing (not to mention I don’t have to swing my head back and forth between people, getting dizzy).
