Design Updates

Jun 30, 2005 Author: Meredith | Filed under: site design

I’m continuing to update my website like a crazy person; today I switched all of the main pages in the www domain to a single bunny-themed design from Groovy Lizard. There are several others I’m considering: White Tile (nice clean look), Lollypop (fun and pink), Fleurish (fresh design), Pink Poodle (one of my nicknames is poodle), and Nanking Cargo (also Groovy Lizard). All of the design code is in includes anyway, so switching should be very easy.

This afternoon, after a meeting, I will probably go ahead and take the big step I’ve been preparing for.

Added, 3:05pm Okay then. I’ve switched to WordPress. I think it’s pretty seamless, though I’m a bit worried about the RSS stuff. I wonder if I can convince WP to publish to full.xml instead of whatever it wants to use. The primary motivating factor behind the change was that I couldn’t get the MT-Protect plugin working properly. It seems trivial to abandon MT over something like that, but that seems to be the only protection plugin and it just wasn’t working for me.

Meeting a Friend

Jun 29, 2005 Author: Meredith | Filed under: people

I haven’t said much today, or done much reading of journals, because I spent the entire day working on a huge change to my website. (Okay, I did have a meeting to interpret in the afternoon.) I think everything is set up and ready and all my problems are solved…it’s just a matter of getting over the fear and going live with the changes!

I do want to mention, though, that I had coffee with eyes_of_cyrene last night - and we chatted for three hours! She is even more beautiful in person than she is in her pictures; when I saw her coming around the corner my jaw almost dropped - fortunately I picked it back up again before she noticed. :eek!: It felt like we’d known each other for a long time already, and the time absolutely flew by. We were there so late that the coffeeshop employees started staring pointedly at us - we weren’t the last ones there (they have free wifi) but almost! We talked about all kinds of things, and I just had an absolutely wonderful time. She asked an employee to take a picture of us, I can’t wait to see it! To summarize, eyes_of_cyrene is really really cool.

    Oblivious

I am so oblivious! As I was walking in this morning, one of my deaf clients waved me over and introduced me to his sons. (Today is Family Day, there are lots of activities and games and very little work gets done.) I said hello, nice to meet you, etc. and then my client said “You know their mom, right?” No… “You don’t know their mom?” No… “You don’t know who their mom is?” By this point I was thinking maybe he was using some bizarre new sign and wasn’t saying mom at all, because how could I have known who their mom is? So he told me her name…and she’s another one of our deaf clients! In all this time working here I never once connected their last names, even though it’s not a common name. She came up and hugged one of her sons while I told what her husband had just said to me, so we all had a good laugh at how I never realized the two of them were married.

    Ink in the Skin

I have a tattoo. Some people would say it’s two tattoos, but they make one piece. (If you haven’t seen my whole tattoo, there’s a picture here.) I like having a tattoo, even if it’s somewhere I see only once in a great while. Sometimes I even forget it’s there, but I do like having it! I got my tattoo in December 1999, and I was supposed to return to the studio six months later to have it touched up. The entire tattoo is black work in rather large sections, and on this type of tattoo (anything with lots of black) it is not perfect the first time - there are shades of gray. Hence, going back for a touch-up; I’m told returning for further touch-ups over the years is also recommended. But I never went back for my first one - the memory of the terrible pain was too fresh in my mind. And as with all things that get dropped at the wayside, I never did make it back for the touch-up.

A friend of mine suggested getting it fixed up this weekend, but I doubt I’ll be goaded into it. That got me thinking about tattoos, though, and I looked up how tattoos work. That article is primarily about artwork tattoos, the “normal” kind, but it makes a passing mention of permanent makeup. I learned that this is also called micropigmentation or dermagraphics. Permanent makeup is commonly seen as eyeliner, eyelashes, and eyebrows (the last one is an approved reconstructive treatment for alopecia patients), but it can also be done on the lips, as cheek blush, or elsewhere on the body. Getting tattoos on one’s lips isn’t unheard of - BMEzine has more than 200 pictures in the lip tattoo gallery, and there are even a dozen tongue tattoos, plus a guy who tattooed his entire tongue blue himself. But I suspect that even the most hardcore body mod fan would shy away from having a tattoo gun only millimeters from their eyeball. There are a couple of process pictures on this page (and the next), and there’s some eyebrow tattoos, but for the most part I believe the only people insane enough to put a tattoo gun anywhere near their eyes are the micropigmentation customers who are getting permanent eyeliner because they don’t have time to put on the real thing in the morning.

I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe lots of people go for having the brim of their eyelid tattooed. Maybe it’s not as painful (they do use topical anesthetic) or as nervewracking as it seems. But fucking hell, it sure sounds crazy to me.
