The bit on whistled languages isn’t too surprising. The bits of the brain we think of a “language centers” really do more generalized tasks like pattern and symbol recognition. Show a subject square-triangle-circle over and over and Broca’s area lights up like an Xmas tree. Whistled language is just a slight shift in modality from spoken language, so it’s good to see that it wasn’t different.
Interestingly enough, David Corina (one of the researchers) is pretty well-known in the sign linguistics world. Check it out:
