This meme has been seen at several blogs I read, but I stole the subject line from jadedgrrl.

1) …John F. Kennedy was shot? (11/22/1963)
Not yet born - in fact I suspect I wasn’t even a glimmer in my mother’s eye, given that she was only sixteen at the time.

2) …Mt. St. Helen’s blew? (5/18/1980)

This time I was a glimmer in my mother’s eye - in fact I think I was a collection of cells in her uterus at that point.

3) …the Challenger exploded? (1/28/1986)
I was just five years old, and I don’t quite remember where I was. My mother has told me that they showed it repeatedly on TV at school, and that I came home very upset.

4)…the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco? (10/07/1989)
I don’t remember where I was, but I can tell you where my girlfriend was - she was in Santa Cruz, near the epicenter. She remembers that day very well - she was paying a cashier when the earthquake first hit, and she had to walk home several miles.

5)…the Berlin Wall Fell? (11/07/1989)
I was eight years old, almost nine. I don’t remember where I was.

6) … the Gulf War began? (01/16/1991)
This was two days before my tenth birthday. I don’t quite remember where I was at the time, but I do remember hearing about it on the radio near Xmas and wondering what was going to happen.

7) … OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco? (06/17/1994)
This was the summer after my freshman year of high school, so I was probably in Québec at the time. I do remember watching the trial on TV in my English class my junior year, though.

8) … the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed? (04/19/1995)
I was working on a science project at a classmate’s house. Her parents had the TV on and we all crowded around. I remember being worried for my Muslim classmates.

9)…Princess Di was killed? (08/31/1997)
I had already moved into my dorm at college but I don’t think classes had started yet. A girl who lived down the hall whom I’d met a couple of times already came and banged on our door to tell me about it; she had a TV so we went back to her room to watch the news.

10) … terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center? (09/11/2001)
Like many people, I was just settling into the workday when this happened. I was on MOO and heard about it that way; I wasn’t able to get through to any of the news sites at the time. I worked at a teleconferencing company and the phones were eerily quiet that day; I do remember one woman who got through for a conference and she hadn’t heard about it yet. I had to tell her the conference was canceled and explain why. I do remember somebody on MOO telling me the Pentagon had been hit as well, and I immediately snapped back that it wasn’t funny. Little did I know.

11) … the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas? (02/01/2003)
I was on my way to an all-day workshop at Gallaudet with a friend of mine. His father called on the cell phone as I was driving, and I could only hear half of a strange conversation. During the lunch break of the workshop, everybody was talking about what happened; my friend and I went over to the library to try to get access to a computer and read more. We couldn’t use any of the computers there, though, and ended up reading about it from a computer in the conference center where our workshop was being held.
