Buffy Dating

Jul 31, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: websites

While editing over in the specialized personals category at ODP, I came across a site called Perfect Match that offers several specialized dating sites. One of them is Sunnydate - personals ads for Buffy fans! It looks like a really cute site, with related links and everything - it’s got users in the United States and the UK, as well as Canada and Australia. (The search mechanism is a little clunky, though.)

Bush on Gay Marriage

Great, just great. CNN.com - According to CNN, lawyers for the Bush administration are looking for ways to ensure that marriage is only for heterosexuals. Now can I move to Canada?

Gallaudet’s Fence

Jul 30, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: deafness

The San Diego Union-Tribune has been featuring a family with two deaf children (young adults, really, both with Usher Syndrome) who got cochlear implants. Today’s installment, the last, includes the following quote:

Whereas RIT is about bridging the deaf and hearing worlds, Gallaudet is about preserving deaf culture and maintaining a distinct identity. A forbidding, wrought-iron fence surrounds the campus, reinforcing the notion of separation.

While it’s true that NTID and Gallaudet are somewhat different environments, Gallaudet’s fence has nothing to do with identity! The campus is in a not-so-great part of town, and it has a security kiosk at the front entrance too. The fence is not forbidding - it’s very utilitarian and plain, and is there for the students’ safety. The idea that it’s part of the campus’s focus on Deaf culture is just loony.

Working for Public Access

Jul 29, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: media

Hmm, my local public access channel is looking for volunteers. Maybe that’s something I could do to fill my time. They’re looking for CG operators (character generator), too, and I did that in my TV Production classes in high school.

Wil Wheaton’s Birthday

Jul 29, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: people

Hey, it’s Wil Wheaton’s 31st birthday! (I can’t believe he’s younger than A.) He wrote an entry about it, and StarTrek.com has a page celebrating him. I wish I could remember to read his website - I think it’s awesome that he’s as accessible as he is. (I still want his autograph!)

Kael’s Page

Jul 29, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: people, queer, websites

I had a nice entry with all kinds of butch/femme links written up, and I accidentally deleted it. Ah well, there was only one that I really liked, and I still have the URL.

Kael’s Page is the website of a “a 22 year old stonebutch, uncle, activist, [and] transguy” that has a lot of cool information about transgender and butch/femme issues. He’s currently going through transition and has been on hormones for four months now; he keeps an interesting journal, too.

Post-Blogathon

Jul 28, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: blogathon

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s Blogathon. I don’t regret not participating this year (though I did last year), as I had a rather enjoyable, relaxing day on Saturday - it would have been very different if I’d been sitting in front of the computer all day.

Harvey Milk School

Jul 28, 2003 Author: Meredith | Filed under: education, new york, queer

MSNBC has an article on the “creation” of the Harvey Milk High School. This kind of surprised me, because the school has in fact been around since 1984. Apparently it’s going public now, though, and fortunately it has the support of NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg. Also quoted in the article is the state conservative party chairman, Mike Long, who says “There’s no reason these children should be treated separately.” Obviously he’s never been a gay high school student. The Hetrick-Martin Institute, which runs the school, has statistics on queer youth from the 1980s that indicated the school’s creation was warranted then. There are more recent statistics from the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network that show there is still a need for a safe environment for gay students so they have the same access to learning that all other children do.

@pathseekerken But it's sausage. On a stick. Not so bad itself, but wrapped in a pancake? A BLUEBERRY pancake?! I'm scared on principle. 1 hr ago
