Wil Wheaton’s Autograph

Dec 31, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: people

Argh, I wish I had the $35 to get an autographed picture of Wil Wheaton. It would fit in nicely with my autograph collection, but I don’t have enough money right now. Would that I could afford things like that on a whim! And of course there are limited quantities, so by the time I can afford one it will be too late. Damn!

Monday Mission

Dec 31, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

It’s the very last Monday Mission of 2002! (For once I’m not the one who’s late, too.)

1. Which Blog post of yours was one of your favorites of 2002?
I’m sure I couldn’t choose! There were so many hundreds of posts it would be impossible to pick just one. I’d have to say my entire Blogathon series was among my best blogging/journaling experiences this year.

Lesbian Interpreter Joke

Dec 31, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: deafness, queer

FLASH is the e-zine of the Deaf Queer Resource Center. In today’s issue I found this:

I think the reason there are always sign language interpreters at lesbian events has less to do with concerns for the deaf and more with showing off in public how nimble their fingers are.

Amusingly enough, this was submitted by someone named Meredith - but who isn’t me.

Build a Bunny

Dec 29, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: fun

After having looked around the Build a Bear Workshop several times, today I finally got to follow the process and create my very own furry friend! A’s nickname for me is usually Bunny or Bunz, so I built a lop-eared bunny (18″ tall) rather than a bear. We had to wait in a bit of a line before we got to the stuffing machine, but the girl sitting at the machine let me press the start and stop buttons, and I got to push the foot pedal that injects the stuffing. She had me kiss the little satin heart that goes inside, and I dropped it in. She tore off the bottom part of the sales tag and put it inside - apparently if the toy gets lost, it can be identified through the code on the paper inside. (Of course this only works if the finder knows about this feature and is near a Build a Bear shop.)

At the computer stations, I put in my own name and information before the option of choosing a name came up. I thought for a few minutes and couldn’t come up with anything, then A suggested “Audrey” - she has always said I look like Audrey Hepburn - and we finally decided on “Audrey Hepbunny.” The next stop was the clothing racks, where I declined A’s suggestion that my bunny wear panties! (They looked silly anyway.) I had wanted to get a cute little Chinese-style satin outfit, but between yesterday and today they sold out of them. I was therefore confronted with way too many options, so A went outside to wait while I went through the racks again and again; Audrey finally came home wearing a red star t-shirt and denim skirt. I also picked up a little denim jumper with matching purse, and a pink satin pajama set. I thought about getting the bear slippers since I was making a bunny, but they matched her fur too closely so I just went with the regular bunny slippers instead.

I’ve taken some pictures; I’ll get them online soon.

Busy Xmas Week

Dec 27, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: uncategorized

I’ve now missed a Monday Mission all the way through to a Weekly Wrapup, alas. I’ve been working a lot every day, though, and I’ve also been taking some personal time to be with my girlfriend. I still plan to outline everything I got for Xmas (as much for my own record-keeping purposes as anything else), but now I’ve got to get to bed so I can be interpreting in Baltimore at 6am. Yes, I’ve got another one of those gigs…6-9 and then noon to three, argh. I’m supposed to be at the mall 12-7, but that’ll have to wait. We went to see Nemesis today, though, and I enjoyed it very much.

Greg Hlibok

Dec 25, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: deafness

It turns out that A’s dad works just down the hall from Greg Hlibok, one of the principal student figures in the 1988 Deaf President Now protest at Gallaudet. While sitting around having dessert the idea came up that A’s dad could have something signed by this guy for me, so I immediately thought of The Week the World Heard Gallaudet, the 1989 book about DPN. That turns out to be $30 from Amazon.com, but I also discovered another book called Deaf President Now!: The 1988 Revolution at Gallaudet University, which is from 1995 and also costs $30. Now what do I do? Which is better? Presumably the later one…maybe I’ll visit the Gallaudet library and look through both to determine which to purchase and have signed.

Happy Holidays

Dec 24, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: miscellaneous

I haven’t posted for the past few days because I was in NYC. We saw Chicago at the Shubert Theater, and saw the new LOTR movie and Drumline as well. I’m at work now and will be for the next several hours (hooray for the Apple store again), and then I’ll be going to my parents’ house for tonight and tomorrow morning; we’re going to my girlfriend’s house tomorrow afternoon. I wanted to wish everyone reading a happy holidays just the same. Hopefully I’ll get my holiday cards written soon, maybe even addressed and everything. Oh, and I have a cold. What fun!

Weekly Wrapup

Dec 20, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: writing prompts

Here’s the current Weekly Wrapup:

1. What is your favorite holiday-themed (i.e., specifically involving a winter holiday) movie? Why?
I guess I’ll have to go with A Christmas Story. It feels kind of like an easy answer to say that, but I don’t really enjoy holiday-themed movies because I don’t want to watch them at any other time of year. I’ve seen A Christmas Story several times by now, though; I’m not sure if it will start getting old soon.

Secret Santas

Dec 20, 2002 Author: Meredith | Filed under: uncategorized

The Dykewrite exchange went pretty well. I sent GutterGrrl a ribbon embroidery kit and a how-to video because she’s a crafty type, and she really enjoyed it. Oddly enough, her girlfriend, TexasYankee, turned out to be my Secret Santa - I recognized the return address right away! She sent me a gorgeous picture for the wall - it’s two black and white photographs in one frame, one on top of the other, showing the two parts of the sign for “friend.” Despite the markings on the outside, though, the USPS managed to break the glass on the frame - argh! So I haven’t really been able to play with it much yet, because I haven’t had time to clean up all the little shards rattling around inside the package. Damn postal service.

I haven’t sent out my Everything2 gift yet, but I haven’t gotten mine either. I have everything in the box, it’s just a matter of finishing the card and getting it to the post office.

@pathseekerken But it's sausage. On a stick. Not so bad itself, but wrapped in a pancake? A BLUEBERRY pancake?! I'm scared on principle. 1 hr ago
