feeling suicidal? wear red and beam down
Yesterdays’s print edition of the Blade’s Bitch Session included the following:
To the lesbians who walk around bare-breasted in the dyke march and pride “reclaiming their bodies”: Who had them before you did? Who took them from you? What is it about your saggy boobs that makes you proud? So you’re not slaves to Madison Avenue. But you certainly are to your appetites. Believe me when I say that no straight or gay men ever wanted your bodies to begin with.
This has me so pissed off I haven’t even figured out what to say yet, but you better believe I’m going to. If you come up with something, you can either fill out the form on the site or call it in to 1-800-858-8088. Please do let me know what you say.
Now that more than a week has passed since the Blogathon, it’s time for me to ask you to open your wallets again. It’s for a much better cause this time - Out of the Darkness, a 26-mile walk to raise money for the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. My dad is going to be among 3,000 participants walking from Fairfax, VA into downtown Washington DC - in the middle of the night. This is a very important cause for him, and an important achievement.
Please, whether you know someone who’s committed suicide, or been affected by it, consider contributing to the cause. You can visit my dad’s contribution page and read about why this is important to him, and then donate online.
Think about it, and then do it. It’s worth it.
I am trying to actually focus on work today, because if I can get everything done then I get to go home around 4:00 instead of 5:30. My boss surprised me with that this morning; he said I’d been stuck here on my own a lot this week and he wanted to reward me. I need to upgrade MT from 2.2 to 2.21 so the MTIfEmpty will work, and I’ve been playing with FreshBlogs too, plus I want to see what’s available for kayaking this weekend, if anything. But I am trying to do work! Honest I am.
What, me learn from last time?! This time I was writing the post in BlogBuddy, hoping that would keep me safe from a browser crash - and the whole computer crashed. Argh! Anyway, this is today’s Weekly Wrapup.
1. This has been another summer of major blockbuster movies, filled with special effects and big name stars. Which major summer movie has impressed you the most? Why?
Isn’t every summer a major blockbuster summer these days? I don’t even understand when this supposed season begins and ends. I haven’t been very impressed by any movies lately; I guess Minority Report had the best idea, even if it wasn’t executed very well.

I had typed up my answers to this and clicked submit…and the browser crashed. I’d hoped the data got through in time, but no such luck. So here, again, for the first time, are my answers to today’s Friday Five. It’s about heritage, so my mother’s answers are also relevant.
1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?
My heritage is Jewish. We’re not technically from any one place - we’re Jewish. It happens that the last place my ancestors lived before coming to the United States was Russia, but it was in the area that was also Poland at the time - that region was a bit unclear in terms of boundaries. I don’t look Russian or Polish, though - I look Jewish.

I hate water, so I have been drinking Fruit2O recently - it’s flavored spring water made by Veryfine and sweetened with Splenda. It only comes in 16oz bottles, but it’s pretty good - it gets at least a little water into me. We went grocery shopping a couple of nights ago and I saw Fruit2O Plus in Citrus Energy Boost flavor. Okay, that sounds reasonable. It says it’s a naturally flavored spring water beverage - right, they all say that. It mentions that it contains no juice - well, the others probably say that too. And then it says “With Good for You Vitamins & Herbs” - they’ve added and vitamins A, C, B3, B6, and B12 “to strengthen the body.” They’ve also added ginseng (third-to-last ingredient), guarana (next-to-last ingredient), and taurine (fourth ingredient) to “provide a lasting boost of energy.”
But that’s not really where the energy boost comes from. Off to the side, in slightly larger print, it says “Contains Caffeine.” What? They put caffeine in my water? I’m sorry, that’s just weird. I probably wouldn’t have gotten this flavor if I had known, as I’m trying to avoid caffeine. Oh well.
A is going to meet me at City Lights of China in about 45 minutes, and then we’ll go to the movie theater and meet up with my friend from Gallaudet. I’ll finally get to see the movie!
1. If you could (a) prevent an earthquake in Peru that will kill 40,000, (b) a crash at an airport near you that will kill 200, or (c) an automobile accident that will kill an acquaintance of yours, which one would you choose to avert?
That’s a pretty tough question. I’d have to go with the earthquake. It has more impact than a plane crash, and if it’s just an acquaintance I’d rather save 40,000 people. If it were a close friend or someone I loved - I have no idea how I’d respond.

I washed my hair last night, and it’s nice and fluffy today. I like having clean hair. I’m mostly just fiddling around this morning, checking my e-mail and chatting with Kethet about MT, which he’s recently installed. I decided my blog-related goal for the day was to implement either a new skin, MTIfEmpty, or the custom additional text message. I’m not sure the last one can even be implemented while I’ve got comments collapsed, or if there’s even a need to; I’d like the “show more” to be customizable if possible but I don’t know how that would work.
I found the writing style quiz through Kristine (who found it through Mariann - Kristine came first in my Bloglet e-mail!). The quiz determined that I am an Essay Writer, which means I “like to take an analytical and objective approach to the subjects [I] write about. By telling the hard truth without any frills [I] make lots of enemies as well as lots of friends.” Well, they’re half-right; I don’t necessarily make enemies or friends through my writing but I am a factual noder all the way.
For a brief moment there I felt like doing real work, but now I’d rather go through the Dykewrite ring, or check up on some of the people from the Blogathon, or write a node, or edit for ODP - anything but work. I better do work. Oh, but first I have to try to get this yogurt spot out of my jeans. I didn’t do it when it happened and now it just looks…um, wrong.
