Morning squirrel count: 10

I’m currently working with shedragon to clean up the ODP’s Blogging Tools category, but it’s a tough job. Currently the category is a mix of all kinds of sites, not all of which belong there. I’m trying to figure out a better structure for that section of the directory, and I’d like to solicit the help of anybody reading this.

Some of it is easy to figure out; I’ve already established a category for Templates, and something for Remote Commenting would be fairly straightforward. Where I’m running into trouble is determining an appropriate directory structure, and clear category names.

  • Sites like wBloggar and BlogBuddy have a clear purpose, but not a clear name. Are they Software? Clients? Perhaps a Clients subdirectory in a Software category?
  • Sites that host everything for you - LiveJournal, Diaryland - are also pretty clear-cut; those are Hosts. The only question is whether they go to the Journal Hosts category and have an @link from the Weblogs hierarchy, or whether they get their own category in Weblogs. If they get their own category, to what extent can there be duplication, and should only blog hosts be listed? (This raises the issue of the blurring line between journals and blogs, too.)
  • What are sites like Movable Type, Blogger, BigBlogTool, and all those? They let you have your writings on your own site, so they don’t fit in as hosts. Blogger depends on its server for you to be able to post; MT lets you host everything on your own server. What about The Journaling Script and others like it? These could be Publishers or Scripts (though not Blogger) or some kind of Software…?
  • There should be a category for syndication, to hold sites like Syndic8 and NewsIsFree. There should presumably be a subcategory for Aggregators like AmphetaDesk, but then again that’s probably taken care of by the RSS News Readers category so all that would be necessary is an @link. Should trackers fit in with syndication? BlogTrack and BlogTracker are not about syndication, but it seems close enough and we don’t want to have a whole bunch of categories each containing just a few sites.
  • And then there are all those little toys and utilities and helpers. Where does BlogAmp go? What about Bloglet, Blogstickers, Blogsnob and Blogrolling? There are a whole lot of these sites, and I’ve no idea where to put them. I don’t know whether to call them Tools, or Utilities, or something else altogether.

If you’re not already familiar with ODP but want to help me out with this anyway, take a look at the guidelines for tips on how we do things like this. I’d really appreciate the help! (I may also turn to the Eatonweb Portal, which took over from the now-frozen Weblog Madness.)
