Okay, this is just unbelievable. I’m trying to figure out how many points Thai food is - that’s where the ASL dinner is tonight - and so I’m scouring the Weight Watchers message boards. I just came across a signature that says the girl is 15, 5-foot-3, with a BMI of 16.4. Start weight: 115. Current weight: 93. Goal weight: 76.

I don’t think Weight Watchers was intended to be used for structured anorexia.

Update, 12:27pm When A got home, I mentioned this to her, and she agreed that the girl needs help. She suggested I contact WW, so I decided to go ahead and write to them. Here’s what I sent.

I am not sure I am writing to the correct department; if not I hope you will forward my message to the proper section.

I am concerned about a member with the screen name “[removed]” whose signature I saw on the message boards. She claims to be 15 years old and 5-foot-3 with a BMI of 16.4. Her start weight is listed as 115, current weight 93, goal weight 76.

It should be readily apparent that a 15-year-old girl who is 5-foot-3 should NOT weigh 76 pounds. I believe she is using Weight Watchers as a form of structured anorexia. I have battled anorexia myself (oh how times change!) and I have seen young girls die from it. The manner in which she is using the WW program is entirely inappropriate. (I say this not because I am jealous - 115 is my own goal weight - but because it is obvious she is using the program incorrectly.)

I am not suggesting WW yank her from the program, rather I hope someone will contact her or her family. The Subscription Agreement explicitly states “The Website is not intended for use by minors…” and yet she is obviously paying to participate in the program. I write as a concerned member, and I hope someone at Weight Watchers will agree that it is imperative the girl be made aware of what she is doing. As I have said, anorexia is not only dangerous but can be deadly; her goal of 76 pounds is likely to be both. Anorexia is a disease, and WW is enabling her to continue her illness.

Please, I implore you, take some action on this matter. If you have questions, concerns, comments, or feedback, please feel free to contact me.
