Today’s installment of Ann Landers includes a letter from a 15-year-old girl whose father has screwed up her college savings. It seems that when the girl and her sister were born, her parents set up joint savings accounts (one per daughter) for their college education. When their parents divorced seven years ago, the father took half the money from each account and put it into new accounts with himself as the sole trustee. The sister’s account is suddenly empty, and the girl who wrote got the run-around when she asked her father about it. She thinks their father spent all the money, and their mother certainly can’t afford college expenses on her own. Ann’s response was not to worry about hurting the father’s feelings, but to confront him about it and start checking out loans and scholarships.
What a bastard.
